For over a decade, advocates and families across Iowa have worked tirelessly toward one clear goal: equality for adoptive parents in the workplace. This July, that goal became a reality.

Effective July 1, 2025, Iowa parents who adopt a child up to six years old are now entitled to the same parental leave and workplace protections as parents who give birth. This change, supported by lawmakers and championed by organizations like Iowans for Adoption and Equality for Adoptive Families, represents a profound step forward for Iowa families.

Adoptive Families Parental Leave Rights

The first months after a child joins a family—whether through birth or adoption—are critical for bonding and adjustment. Equal parental leave ensures that adoptive parents have the time and security they need to nurture their child’s emotional well-being, strengthen attachment, and build a stable family foundation.

To celebrate this major legislative victory and to continue raising awareness for children still waiting to be adopted, Iowans for Adoption invites everyone to join our annual Move for Adoption event. This inclusive celebration welcomes participants of all abilities to run, walk, roll, stroll, ride, or simply cheer from the sidelines—no registration or donation required.

The in-person event will be held Sunday, July 27, at 1 PM at Utopia Park (7000 Vista Drive, West Des Moines). Families can enjoy a 5K run, kids’ fun run, free crane games, face painting, balloons, promotional items, and medals for all youth participants.

Prefer to celebrate from home? The virtual Move for Adoption allows participants to join from anywhere, at any time, and for any distance. Whether you choose to walk your neighborhood, bike with your kids, or share your support online, your participation helps spread awareness and compassion.

As I’ve said before, not everyone may be able to adopt or foster but everyone can Move for Adoption. Every step, every share, and every conversation brings us closer to a future where all children have safe, loving, and permanent families.

This new parental leave law affirms what we’ve always believed: that families formed through adoption deserve equal support, protection, and celebration. It’s one more example of how collective advocacy can make life-changing differences for Iowa’s children and families.

Let’s keep that momentum going—together.
