The heartbreaking discovery of a deceased premature infant in a trash container at a Perry, Iowa child care facility Tuesday, September 15, 2026, is a reminder of why education about safe options for parents in crisis is so important.

The National Center for Adoption (doing business as Iowans for Adoption), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, has made educating the public about Iowa’s Safe Haven Act a key part of its statewide mission. The law provides a safe, legal option for parents to relinquish an infant within the law’s requirements, with the goal of protecting vulnerable babies when a parent believes they cannot safely care for them.


“We don't know if this mom was aware of the Safe Haven Law,” said Dr. Diana Lang, Executive Director and Founder of Iowans for Adoption. “But we do know that education matters. Someone facing an unexpected pregnancy or crisis needs to know there are safe places to turn—and they need to know before they are in that moment.”


That message was central to Iowans for Adoption’s From Hope to Home Gala, held Thursday, September 17, at Reiman Gardens in Ames.


The event helps support the nonprofit's statewide efforts, including Safe Haven education, foster and adoptive family recruitment, adoption assistance, and helping children find safe, stable, loving and permanent families. “Every child deserves a safe, stable, loving, permanent family,” Lang said. “We want people to know that even in moments of crisis, there are options.”
